Kalki is the 10th avatar of Lord Vishnu who arrival in imminent, as per Hindu mythology.

The film is due a worldwide theatrical release on June 27 in the Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and English languages.

The wait is finally over! After numerous posters, teasers and delays, the makers of finally released the film’s trailer on Monday. Directed by Nag Ashwin, this post-apocalyptic film is inspired by Hindu scriptures and set in the year 2898 AD. The movie stars Prabhas as Bhairava, an avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, with Amitabh Bachchan portraying the immortal Ashwatthama. The cast also includes Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani in significant roles.

The 183-second trailer more than makes up for the delays and lack of promo materials so far, introducing us to the unique world of Bhairava. It starts with children learning about Kaashi, the first city in the new world. As the trailer progresses, it reveals the ongoing power struggle and the consistent oppression of the underprivileged.

However, it also heralds the return of a power that has existed for 6,000 years. Enter Bhairava, who has “never lost a fight to date”. This battle, however, won’t be easy for him, as the trailer concludes with a glimpse of the formidable evil (Kamal) he must face. “Fret not, a new era is arriving,” the devil says, setting the stage for the ultimate battle.

In a recent interview, director Nag Ashwin discussed  approach to religion, particularly in the current polarized climate, and explained why he is not worried about this aspect. Speaking to Deadline, Ashwin mentioned that the film “does not involve any characters actively worshipped by large numbers of Hindus”. He also stressed that the movie’s narrative should be interpreted subjectively rather than strictly through a religious lens. “Of course, if you tell it in the Indian context there will be a bit of devotion and emotion, but I feel any story can be dealt with subjectively without bringing a religious connotation,” he said.

With an estimated budget of $75 million, is set to be one of India’s most ambitious and expensive productions. The film aims for a global release similar to the success of SS Rajamouli’s RRR in 2022. Prabhas ended his streak of flops with his last film Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, which grossed over Rs 700 crore worldwide. The actor is looking to continue his comeback with Kalki 2898 AD after a series of unsuccessful films.
Originally scheduled for release on May 9, faced delays and will now premiere globally on June 27.
