Ronaldo broke the Saudi Pro League record for most goals scored in a single season.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the record for most goals in a Saudi Pro League season by scoring two goals for Al Nasr against Al Ittihad, reaching a total of 35.

Al Nasr will face Saudi Pro League champions Al Hilal in the King Cup of Champions final on Friday at 11:30 PM IST at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah.

Al Hilal secured the title with three games to spare and remained unbeaten in the league with 31 wins and three draws. Cristiano Ronaldo and company finished 14 points behind in second place.

Al Nasr reached the final by defeating Al Khaleej 3-1 in the semifinal, thanks to goals from Ronaldo and Sadio Mane, while a 10-man Al Hilal team overcame Al Ittihad 2-1 after Sergej Milinković-Savić received a red card a few minutes before halftime.

Al Hilal is eyeing a domestic treble after securing the league and the Saudi Super Cup, while Al Nasr aims to make the most of their last chance this season by winning the Arab Club Champions Cup.

Al-Hilal won a penalty shootout 5-4 to decide a final that finished 1-1 after extra time in Jeddah. Ronaldo, who Dec 2022, fell to the ground in despair and was consoled by teammates at King Abdullah Sports City.

There was no such comfort this time at the end of a tempestuous encounter that saw two goals and three red cards.

Aleksandar Mitrovic headed Al-Hilal ahead after seven minutes. It got worse for Al-Nassr early in the second half when goalkeeper David Ospina, formerly of Arsenal and Napoli, was sent off for handling the ball outside the area.

Ayman Yahya headed Al-Nassr level shortly after.

Following a second yellow card for Chelsea signee Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer, Al-Hilal had another defender sent off in the ninetieth minute.

Extra time ended without any goals, and a shootout was used to decide the winner. Hilal’s opening attempt was missed by Ruben Neves, while Alex Telles, a former Manchester United defender, missed it for Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo, who had earlier struck the bar with an incredible overhead kick, scored from his penalty, but all he could do was watch as Bounou, the hero of Morocco’s run to the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals, made two saves: one from Ali Al-Hassan and the other from Al-Nemer.

Hilal won his 11th King’s Cup thanks to the saves, while Ronaldo and his team will have to wait until the next season.
